Governor, Congressman Bishop to discuss

Daggett County agreement on Public Lands Initiative

SALT LAKE CITY (Oct. 21, 2014) – Gov. Gary R. Hebert and Congressman Rob Bishop will join with local leaders and conservation groups to share the details of a precedent-setting agreement with Daggett County. The agreement will advance both conservation and development efforts in eastern Utah.

Background:

On Aug. 12, 2014, Daggett County submitted an initial proposal to Congressman Rob Bishop for federal land management changes in Daggett County. The proposal is a component of Congressman Bishop’s Public Lands Initiative, a multi-county land planning process spearheaded in early 2013 to boost local planning, economic development and land conservation. The county requested assistance from the Utah Congressional delegation and Gov. Herbert in finalizing the proposal by “putting together a final plan that will benefit the concerns of the county as weighed against other interests.”

Between Aug. and Oct., staff from Congressman Bishop, Gov. Herbert, the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA), and leaders from conservation organizations including the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, Grand Canyon Trust, The Wilderness Society, Natural Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club have worked to finalize the Daggett County proposal. The principles reflected in the draft agreement represent a pathbreaking model for other counties working though the Public Lands Initiative.
