Harrisville—Some people like collecting coins, others enjoy sewing or quilting. But no matter what it might be, all hobbies are a fun way to show off one’s creative side. It’s even more fun when a person gets to share his or her hobby with those around them, especially if it’s a tasty one. This is exactly what Ashlee Urry gets to do when she makes cakes for other people. No matter how big or small, Ashlee is up to the task.
So how does one become a master cake builder? For Ashlee, it started when her husband bought her two cake decorating classes for her birthday in March 2013. Since then, Ashlee has been able to show off her talents by making and decorating incredible cakes with over 13 different flavors to choose from and more on the way. “I love it when I am able to have creative license on a cake and I'm able to design it how I want,” she said. “I'll usually take a technique I've seen, and have been wanting to try out, and work it into the design somehow.” Ashlee has been able to make cakes for all different kinds of events including weddings and birthdays. In October 2014, she was able to make a special quilt cake for her grandma’s 85th birthday, and needless to say, everyone was impressed. And if you think you won’t enjoy a regular tasting cake, Ashlee can help you out. For example, in October 2013 she made a cinnamon roll wedding cake for her cousin whose wife wasn’t too fond of traditional cakes. With a little ingenuity, Ashlee was able to pull it off and create a truly unique spin on a wedding cake.
The amount of detail on every single cake is incredible, with the extra benefit of it tasting absolutely wonderful. But it’s not just cakes that people have asked Ashlee to make. She’s also had the chance to express her creativity by making cupcakes, cake pops, and dipped pretzels. She also enjoys making toffee, fudge, and caramel popcorn during Christmas time. No matter what it might be that people ask for, they’re guaranteed a delicious tasting treat from Ashlee.
For Ashlee, her cake-making hobby is a labor of love for those she cares about. “I would say my most favorite ones [cakes] I've designed are the ones I've made for people who I love the most,” she said. “It feels like I'm able to put my love into something special for them.” And those who are on the receiving end of Ashlee’s cakes are always sure to have a big smile of their face.
