Matt Gwynn decided to run for election because he has always been interested in and has academically studied government and its relationships. As a military veteran and law enforcement officer, he has had continuous employment in public service since graduating from high school. He currently is a political science major and is working on a Masters degree in public policy and administration.
In 2011, he felt the City council overstepped its bounds by voting against a small assisted living center in Farr West. The zone where it was to be located was zoned appropriately. The City denied the development against the solid recommendation of approval from the planning commission and denied it even though the facility was protected by and mandated by federal law to be allowed in such a zone. He believed this was a case of NIMBY. He said, “Instead of coming together and meeting the needs of seniors this particular neighborhood and City council referred to them as an element and a traffic problem.”
One issue the city council voted on in the past that he would have voted differently on was to add an additional polling place in Farr West City for this year's municipal election. That polling place was going to be at the Remuda golf course clubhouse. The City council (including two incumbents on this year's ballot) unanimously voted against it, citing low voter turnout in Remuda. He felt that lower voter turn-out would be a reason to add the additional polling place.
Mr. Gwynn feels a need to look at the issues individually and make sound judgments based on the needs of the people and businesses within Farr West City.
