UTGOP Statement on Legislative District 58 Special Election

Derrin Owens (R-Fountain Green) has been chosen by Republican state delegates from Legislative District 58 to replace Jon Cox who stepped down recently to become Communications Director for Governor Herbert. LD 58 is comprised of parts of Sanpete and Juab Counties. Owens secured the nomination with 53% of the vote - roughly 29 of 55 possible votes cast. His name will be sent to Governor Herbert for the Governor’s approval, and Representative-elect Owens will assume responsibilities immediately following. The election, which went into 2 rounds of balloting, was held at Snow College in Ephraim during a special caucus. Fifty-five delegates were in attendance, as well as family and staff of the candidates. Utah Republican Party Chairman James Evans presided over the election and issued the following statement:

“Once again, the caucus system has proven successful in allowing the voice of the people to be heard. I look forward to working with Representative-Elect Owens.”
