Lowe’s Heroes to Build ADA and Senior Friendly Garden Plots at Junior League of Ogden’s Oasis Community Garden
May 31, 2016 – Ogden, UT – An army of volunteers from two area Lowe’s stores will descend on Junior League of Ogden’s Oasis Community Garden to build the Wasatch Front’s largest installation of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and senior friendly raised garden plots. The volunteers will, install irrigation to the plots, clean-up wind damage and beautify the garden. Community members are invited to volunteer during the established work schedule daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 31 through June 4 at 2445 Monroe Blvd. in Ogden. This initiative came to realization through a collaboration with Nurture the Creative Mind and financial support from a Weber County RAMP grant.
The 17 new 10x4 foot garden plots are elevated to table height or table height, with ample clearance for wheelchairs or available for seated gardening, putting the entire garden within arm’s reach with no kneeling or bending required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention one out of every five adults in the United States has a disability. By 2030, the population of people 65 years of age and over is expected to double and will represent nearly 20 percent of the total U.S. population. ADA and elder-friendly gardens ensure everyone has access to nutritious food and a healthy, outdoor activity.
These newly built plots in addition to the 34 standard community garden plots are available for rent during each growing season. Each plot includes water and access to garden tools during open garden hours. To reserve a spot, visit http://bit.ly/24hFUQ3.
