Hatch Lauds Signing of EU-U.S. Privacy Shield

Washington, D.C.—Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, the senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and Chairman of the Senate Republican High-Tech Task Force, issued the following statement following the signing of the new EU-U.S. Privacy Shield:

“Today’s approval of the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield is a watershed moment for transatlantic relations and online data privacy. This historic pact affirms cross-border data transfer rules that provide a critical legal framework for how digital information is moved across the Atlantic. In addition to bolstering American businesses, the Privacy Shield also strikes the right balance between personal privacy and public security while ensuring that cross-border data transfers between the two regions continue without interruption.

“Generating goodwill among our European allies was essential to enacting the Privacy Shield. To help earn the trust of our transatlantic partners, I led the legislative battle in Congress to enact the Judicial Redress Act—a bill that provided much-needed assurances to European leaders negotiating the final terms of the Privacy Shield agreement. I was grateful to be part of a good faith effort to bring our European friends to the table to help pass a deal that benefits businesses both here and abroad.”
