Organizers of “Chalk it Up North” want to give an update on the first annual event. With a huge thank you to all those that helped to make the first annual “Chalk It Up North” such a massive success! There was more than 80 cars in the car show, more than 52 chalk artists, and thousands of attendee’s at the different events! The event was able to generate approximately $15,000 for the Just-a-Break foundation!
This money will go to ‘give a break’ to cancer patients, giving them an evening out with their families through gift certificates for hotels, movies, restaurants, and so much more! A special thanks goes to Greg Thorpe, founder of the Just-a-Break foundation, for giving our event a special purpose and heart! For more information about the Just-a-Break foundation and Greg’s story, please visit www.justabreak.org.
The winners of the Chalk Art competition are as follows:
FIRST PLACE: "Furious Fortitude" by Kasey, Kris, and Annie Barker
SECOND PLACE: "Under the Sea" by Sarah Kap
THIRD PLACE: "John 15:13 Tribute" by Jaycee Gray
HONORABLE MENTION: "Giraffes" by M'Lynn Sowinski

And please, plan to attend next year’s festival! It will be August 25th and 26th, 2017. We are already counting on nearly 200 cars for the car show and hope to double the 320 runners we had at the 5K. Let's make this into an annual tradition of fun and charity for North Ogden City!

Mayor Brent Taylor announced Re-Development of old Smith's Plaza to Begin This Month. Economic Development Update: All Stores to Remain Open during Construction.
“After years of effort, I am pleased to announce that the old Smith's building plaza will be completely remodeled, starting this month. The first phase of the "Crossroads at North Ogden" project is a complete facade & roof remodel and parking lot renovation of the strip mall north of the old Smith's. We then expect the project to continue with work on the old Smith's building itself next month to prepare for new stores to open (that phase of the project is not quite finalized for announcement, but it’s close... more details to follow).”
The existing strip mall facade is dated and worn, and the beautiful, tasteful new facade will generate higher property taxes and will stimulate increased economic success. It will also improve the appearance of our commercial downtown. Little Caesar's has also committed to doing a full remodel of their store at the same time.
The facade work will begin within two weeks and is expected to last until late October. All stores will remain open and accessible during the construction.
Re-development of this area was included as a specific goal in our City Community Development Area (CDA) Project Plan, because we need to fill the old Smith's building and revitalize the strip mall appearance as part of attracting quality commercial developments in the surrounding area. We are stimulating this project with a $200,000 investment of CDA funds (the CDA is a separate City entity that receives a share of the higher property taxes that result from certain economic development projects, and that must use these specific tax revenues on projects that stimulate economic development). Acting on our stimulus, the private sector is providing the vast majority of the project funding (several million dollars). By revitalizing this plaza, we will stimulate additional economic development in the area, as the appearance improves and as the empty Smith's store is filled. We are currently working with several high-quality developers for other projects, including across the street west of Walgreen's. There are some great projects that will be happening soon in North Ogden! More details to follow....
