Morning Must Reads for Friday, November 11, 2016

Good Friday morning from Salt Lake City. Today is the 316th day of the year. There are 50 days left in 2016.

Donald Trump visits the White House. Utah Republican legislators select their leadership for the next legislative session. More protests against Trump's election.

The clock:

  • 38 days until the Electoral College meets to cast their votes for president and vice president (12/19/2016)
  • 70 days until Inauguration Day (1/20/2017)
  • 73 days until the first day of the 2017 Utah Legislature (1/23/2017)
  • 118 days until the final day of the 2017 Utah Legislature (3/9/2017)
  • 361 days until the 2017 municipal elections (11/7/2017)
  • 725 days until the 2018 midterm elections (11/6/2018)

Ten talking points for Friday:

  1. House and Senate Republicans pick their leadership for the 2017 and 2018 Utah Legislatures [Utah Policy, Tribune].

  2. What the heck happened this week in Utah politics? Watch our video rundown of the week that was right here [Utah Policy].

  3. While most pollsters are nursing black eyes because they got the presidential election wrong, LaVarr Webb argues that our pollster, Dan Jones, mostly got things right [UtahPolicy].

  4. President-elect Donald Trump visits the White House to meet with President Barack Obama and Congressional leaders [Politico].

  5. It might not be over. A political analyst predicts the presidential election could end up in a tie between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. So far, New Hampshire, Michigan, and Arizona have not yet declared who won their presidential elections, which could give Clinton a total of 259 electoral votes. There's also growing doubt that Trump won Wisconsin, which would make the election a tie, throwing the ultimate decision to the House of Representatives [Newsweek].

  6. More protests across the country opposing Donald Trump's election spring up [CBS News]. Protesters in Salt Lake City marched down the middle of State Street to the Utah Capitol [Tribune]. Trump got his Twitter back and immediately complained about the protests on social media [Huffington Post].

  7. Gov. Gary Herbert says he's hopeful that Donald Trump's rhetoric on immigration is mostly hyperbole rather than solid policy proposals [Deseret News].

  8. Utah Republicans see good things ahead for the state with Donald Trump in the White House [Tribune].

  9. The Utah GOP is upset with delays resulting from the way Salt Lake County handled the election [Deseret News].

  10. Gov. Gary Herbert makes some changes to his cabinet and senior staff. Most notably, Herbert appointed former Deseret News Editor Paul Edwards as his spokesperson [Utah Policy, Deseret News, Tribune].

On this day in history:

  • 1620 - Forty-one Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower, anchored off Massachusetts, signed a compact calling for a "body politick."
  • 1831 - Nat Turner, who led fellow slaves on a bloody uprising in Virginia, was hanged. Turner, an educated minister, believed he was chosen by God to lead people out of slavery.
  • 1918 - World War I ended with the signing of an Armistice in a railroad car in a forest in France.
  • 2000 - Republicans went to court seeking an order to block manual recounts from continuing in Florida's presidential election.
