Where:

Utah State Capitol, Gold Room

350 N. State Street

Salt Lake City, Utah, 84114

When:

Thurs., Dec. 15, 2016 at 1:30 p.m.

Who:

Gov. Gary R. Herbert

Sergeant First Class Brett Heath, award recipient

Major General Jefferson S. Burton, The Adjutant General

Members of the Utah National Guard

Notes:

The Utah Cross is second in order of precedence for state awards, and is approved by the Adjutant General. The Utah Cross may be presented to any member of the Utah National Guard who distinguishes himself or herself through a voluntary course of action, the omission of which would not justly subject the individual to criticism for not having performed that course of action. The individual must voluntarily accept existing danger or extraordinary responsibilities with praiseworthy fortitude and exemplary courage that are clearly above and beyond the call of duty.

On Dec. 5, 2013, SFC Heath was heading home from work when he observed a house on fire. After assisting the homeowner and verifying no one else was present in the home he assisted in fighting the fire. While in this pursuit, there was a large explosion from within the structure. SFC Heath was hit in the right eye with a piece of shrapnel which caused him to initially lose sight in his right eye. After surgery and therapy, he has regained partial sight. SFC Heath will be awarded the Utah Cross for his bravery and exemplary courage.
