Oh, the woe of losing things

Socks, gloves, ink-pens. The sneaky universe steals these things from me. Or the Sock Fairy visits while I sleep and hides one sock of each color. Or a hungry Glove Grinch lives in my coat pocket. And I’ve left countless umbrellas behind—only to be reminded on the next rainy day. I am the queen of losing one earring.

The Mystery of Missing Socks

Why do socks disappear? A sock monster with lots of feet. A black hole in the washer or dryer. Socks get divorced. What’s the deal?

2-1-2020 Fear of the unknown fuels anxiety

Uncertainty, unpredictability, uncontrollability. Eek! Run for cover. Fear of the unknown is called anticipatory anxiety. You anticipate the “what ifs” and worry until the cows come home. Thoughts ruminate around and around like a blender inside your head.

1-31-2020 Democracy and Tyranny

During President Donald J. Trump's impeachment trial, we'll hear a lot of talk about our rules for governing. One frequent claim is that our nation is a democracy. If we've become a democracy, it would represent a deep betrayal of our founders, who saw democracy as another form of tyranny. In fact, the word democracy appears nowhere in our nation's two most fundamental documents, the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

Although no president has been removed from office through impeachment conviction what would happen were Donald J. Trump the first?  The Constitution is clear.  He would be removed from office immediately and forbidden “to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States” again.  As a private citizen, without privilege due to executive office, he would be “liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to law.”  If the crime were serious enough he could go to prison like anyone else.

Late last year, the House passed a series of bills banning offshore energy development, a significant source of employment for blue-collar Americans. Fueled by environmental fervor, these lawmakers are willing to sacrifice opportunities for their most important constituents.

Ethics course required before gathering shed antlers in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Collecting antlers that fall off the heads of deer, elk and moose each winter is a popular pastime in Utah. Before you head outdoors to collect shed antlers, though, you are required to complete the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources’ Antler Gathering Ethics course

1-28-2020 Historically Speaking-War Powers

My last article dealt with the growing crisis with Iran and the history of American presidents using missile attacks on their enemies. Based on those acts, House Democrats have passed a war powers resolution ordering the president to stop all hostilities with Iran within thirty days. This brings up many Constitutional questions and seems confusing for many. In some ways the Constitution contradicts itself by appointing the president commander-in-chief, while giving Congress the power to declare war. If this seems confusing, that is because it is, even to our political leaders.

Is your dog trying to tell you something?

According to Dr. Gary Richter, one of the top veterinarians in the world, many dogs are at risk of serious health issues... but their owners may be missing the warning signs.

"It’s an epidemic. Over half of all dogs over 10 years old will get cancer," says Dr. Richter. “Even young dogs are at risk. And it’s pretty much all due to one thing: Food.”
