Weightless in Salt Lake City

It doesn’t roll off the tongue like ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ but I’m willing to sacrifice alliteration to make a point, pointless as this may well be.  But we’ll save pointless for Portland ...Pointless in Portland.  But I digress.

Tomorrow's life-saving treatments depend on today's investments

Scientists just discovered a potentially revolutionary treatment for Parkinson's disease. The experimental medicine, which is currently in clinical trials, boosts dopamine production in patients' brain to reduce tremors and improve motor skills.

The drug is one of several "gene therapies" developed in recent years. These medications have the potential to treat -- or even cure -- the world's deadliest diseases by repairing the genetic mutations that caused those ailments.

The one hiccup? Gene therapies come with a hefty price tag -- at least for now.

Trump's maritime fuel policy will sink energy markets

The Trump administration is working to slow down the implementation of a major international environmental regulation that's set to take effect in 2020. The administration hopes that the effort will ease the compliance burden on businesses by phasing in the rules gradually, rather than all at once.

Rediscovering Yourself

 Once The Kids Are Older

After watching their children walk out the door for the last time as they embark upon their own lives, many parents feel lost.  For the last 20 years, they have identified their role in life as family nurturer, dealing with diapers, homework and soccer practice. So how do you turn off that part of your life and undertake a journey of self-discovery to find your passion?

2-8-2019 What energy has to do with national security

This year, U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel barred the Interior Department from moving forward with its offshore drilling plans during the federal government shutdown. According to his injunction, the department is prohibited  “from taking action to promulgate permits ... or take any other official action regarding the pending permit applications for oil and gas surveys in the Atlantic.”

Hopefully, the ban will be lifted now that the shutdown is over. Right now, nearly 94 percent of offshore territories are off-limits to energy explorers.
