Now comes the mid-term elections.

Perhaps what is most astonishing for me, as both an anthropologist and educator, is the level of racist discourse promoted by the current Trump administration against hapless refugees and the so-called threat they pose.

 

Indeed, Trump and his administration have focused on immigrants as a major threat to the security of nation. Such hyped-up racist rhetoric is completely false.

SALT LAKE CITY (Nov. 8, 2018) – In coordination with President Donald J. Trump's proclamation, Gov. Gary R. Herbert has ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the State of Utah out of respect for the victims of the shooting in Thousand Oaks, California. Flags should be lowered immediately and remain lowered until sunset on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018.

Good morning from Washington, where election results last night mean that Democrats will reclaim the House even as Republicans take a bigger majority in the Senate, posing new challenges and opportunities for President Trump. House Democrats will be able to pass some pet legislation and torment the Trump administration with oversight and investigations, for example. But Senate Republicans will have the numbers to stop unwanted bills and ease confirmation of the president’s nominees to courts and agencies. Hold tight, we see a bumpy road ahead.
