Seven months after Paul Mero stepped down, the Sutherland Institute has named Boyd Matheson as its new president. Matheson served for two years as Senator Mike Lee’s (R-UT) Chief of Staff, and more recently as part of Senator Lee’s re-election campaign. Senator Lee describes Matheson as an “astute adviser [and] an essential bridge builder.”

According to a press release from the Sutherland Institute, Matheson was one of dozens of candidates from across the nation who were considered for the position. After a thorough vetting process, Matheson was chosen due to his character and leadership.

Sutherland founder, George Swim, said, “We are confident [Matheson’s] deep grasp of America’s foundational principles and the vision he laid out for the Institute will help Sutherland to have an even greater impact at the state and national levels.”

The Sutherland Institute is a think tank focused on promoting conservative public policy. According to its website, the Institute is dedicated to influencing “public policy in Utah according to enduring principles,” including family, religion, free markets, private property and limited government.

Most recently, the Sutherland Institute maintained a continued presence at the Utah Capitol during the 2016 legislative session, encouraging lawmakers to back several bills designed to help reclaim federal lands in Utah, and strengthen families in spite of the recent Supreme Court ruling in favor of same-sex marriage. Representatives of the Institute often provide scientific evidence and important statistics to legislatures as policy is debated and passed.

The Sutherland Institute website, www.sutherlandinstitute.org, has many resources to learn more about the research done by the Institute, and a list of ways you, too, can get involved.
