Box Elder/Willard Flood Control

There have been some meetings in Willard during the Fall of 2013 to consider the needs of the Box Elder County/Willard City Flood Control and Special Drainage District Board. One item that came before the Board was sale of a detention basin.  Chairman Mike Braegger reported that the detention basin located in the Cherry Wood Subdivision of South Willard was originally scheduled for transfer to Box Elder County.

Unfortunately, the subdivider went bankrupt and the property was not transferred to Box Elder County.  Apparently, the property was purchased and re-sold several times and the new owners probably thought the property could be used for a building lot.  However, that was not true.  The detention basin’s purpose is to retain water during very high rainfall events, and then release it below at a more controlled rate, thus preventing flooding to the property below it.

Chairman Braegger says that the resolution of this problem is now in the hands of the County attorney and probably the Planning and Zoning Commission.  They are reportedly dealing with the property owners to resolve the issue by getting the basin back for the purpose of water retention.
