UTAH DRIVERS:

Tuesday, March 26, 2019 - 12:45pm

The state just passed a new law allowing motorcycles to filter to the front at red lights. Be prepared this summer to starting seeing motorcycles passing between stopped cars at red lights.

If you’re wondering why this has happened... it’s primary to prevent inattentive or distracted drivers from rear ending motorcycles when they come to a stop in traffic. A car can handle being rear ended far better than a motorcycle can.

Here’s some bullet points about the rules...

•It goes into effect IMMEDIATELY. (Confirmed via phone call to Governor’s office 3.25.19)

•It’s allowed on roads with 2 or more lanes in same direction with a speed limit of 45mph or less.

•The motorcycle may not exceed 15mph while “filtering”.

•The cars being filtered through must be completely stopped.
