Safe Kids Day and Healthy Kids Day Fiesta Coming Up!

Thursday, April 26, 2018 - 1:00pm

Summertime is fast approaching; and soon the kids in your neighborhood will be out and about enjoying their freedom!  It’s a time for kids to get up, get out, and grow!

Research shows that kids are likely to gain weight and get behind in their studies over the course of the summer.

This is why Safe Kids Day and Healthy Kids Day wants to invite you and your families out to encourage healthy habits all around. This event will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018, from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at Newgate Mall (36th Street and Wall Ave. Ogden, UT).

Jann Fawcett, Safe Kids Weber-Morgan Coalition Coordinator and Wellness Program Manager with the Weber-Morgan Health Department, says, “This past year Safe Kids Day and Heathy Kids Day received national recognition for our Outstanding Safe Kids Day and Healthy Kids Day 2017 event. We are excited that we are partnering together again to bring our community this event.”

Fawcett goes onto say that, “Since this year’s event falls on Cinco de Mayo, it will carry a “Fiesta” theme to help us provide more fun and festive atmosphere.”

You can expect the event booths and activities to still remain focused on educating families on ways to prevent unintentional injuries. Also, you’ll learn of ways to improve the health and well-being of your families.

Local businesses will come together, along with other organizations and the community to shed light on the many ways we can keep our kids safe throughout the warm, summer months.

Fawcett tells us, “The goal of Safe Kids Day is to raise awareness about the cause of child injury prevention.”

Safe Kids Day has been held in Ogden for 17 years.  Healthy Kids Day has been going on for the past 8 years in Ogden.

It’s fun for the whole family! There will be great prizes and giveaways too. Each child that attends will receive a “Sponsor Passport” that will be marked at each of the dedicated sponsors’ booths.  Those participants who collect each of the stickers will receive a special prize.

Over 200 bike helmets will be available for $5 while supplies last (cash only and children must be present when purchased).

There will also be free kid’s t-shirts available to the first 500 kids who attend.

Here are some ideas of the fun activities you’ll see there:

  • Building mini Home Depot projects
  • Learning about car seat safety
  • Home and fire safety
  • Opportunities to learn about safety with bus, car, bike, pedestrian, ATV and much more
  • Entertainment by Kids Are Music and Dance Kids choirs and also get the chance to meet fun characters

Fawcett tells us, “New this year, thanks to the support from the YMCA of the USA and their commitment to improve walkability in our nation, we have added a fun walking scavenger hunt. It will be part of the passport and located inside the mall.”

This event is sponsored by Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital, Safe Kids Weber-Morgan Coalition, the YMCA of Northern Utah, Weber-Morgan Health Department, many other supporting organizations and national sponsors.  For additional information and updates about the event visit www.ymcautah.org/healthykidsday
