Recently there has been widespread news all about a particular virus, called the Coronavirus, which is affecting thousands in China. The Coronavirus is a respiratory illness and is continuing to rise.
Russell M. Nelson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, has kept good relations for over 40 years with his longtime friends in China (dating back to his successful days as a heart surgeon in the 1980’s). Because of President Nelson’s friendships in China, he wanted to do something to help them during this uncertain and frightening time.
After asking, President Nelson discovered his friends needed protective equipment at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center. Supplies have been low in numbers due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus in Wuhan, China. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will partner with Project HOPE to obtain and deliver the much needed supplies.
Project HOPE, is a global partner who, specifically requested these supplies: masks, goggles, coveralls. These supplies were available in Salt Lake City and Georgia. They were also exactly what was asked of Project HOPE. The Church is prepared to send 220,000 masks, 870 goggles and 6,500 coveralls. Project HOPE has arranged for flights to China from the Bishop’s storehouse in Salt Lake City.
Medical professionals will now have the proper protection, for themselves, against this Coronavirus. Masks will also be given to the general public. Latter Day Saint Charities are grateful to support the people of China through the donations of the members of the Church.
Furthermore, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, who are currently living in China, will have the opportunity to help distribute the essential supplies to the professionals and the general public.
There has now been a report of 6,000 infections of the Coronavirus in China beginning in the Hubei Providence. Other cases are being identified outside mainland China.
