With the work being done on the bridge on 1100 south at the I-15 interchange, there seems to be a lot of questions on exactly what is a DDI? A DDI, short for Diverging Diamond Interchange, is a French engineering concept in which the two directions of traffic are crossed to the opposite side to provide easier access on and off the freeway. This reduces the number of traffic signal phases needed to move motorists through the interchange to two, as opposed to the usual three or four. DDIs efficiently move high volumes of traffic without increasing the number of lanes in an interchange. This also is a cost-effective option that requires less land to purchase this is a good choice when funding is limited. This interchange works well in high traffic area with relatively equal amounts of traffic coming from both directions. Safety was a critical factor in making the choice for a DDI. Our studies show that because traffic crosses from the right side of the road to the left side, movements onto the freeway are free-flowing, with less potential for conflict with vehicles traveling in the other direction. Left turns across traffic are also eliminated and potential conflict points are minimized. The best way to understand this is to go to www.perrycity.org there is a website link, with this link you can view a video and see models on how it works. I recommend for anyone to view this it was very educational in understanding how it works and how we are to drive it.

Updates on the project are: Last Week of April: Expect intermittent delays on 1100 South at the I-15 interchange for one-to-two days while crews switch traffic to the newly constructed north bridge of the DDI.  Early May: Crews will close northbound and southbound I-15 at night, two consecutive nights, while they demolish the old bridge. Signs and the Utah Highway Patrol will direct I-15 traffic through the on- and off-ramps. They will also direct 1100 south eastbound and westbound traffic. Crews will begin construction of the south DDI Bridge after the demolition of the old bridge.
