Dear Editor - Animal Cruelty

Dear editor

I have always been sensitive when it comes to animals. I have a deep love for animals that goes back to my childhood and I have long been troubled by animal cruelty. So often in the media you see cats and dogs abused by humans. It’s so awful to hear of the things we put animals through. I was thrilled when Utah made egregious animal cruelty a felony.

I was therefore repulsed to discover that I may have been inadvertently purchasing eggs from a company that abuses it’s chickens: Costco. I was recently shown an undercover animal cruelty video filmed at a farm that supplies eggs to Costco. It showed hens crammed into tiny, wire cages that were caked with faeces. The birds could not outstretch their wings, could barely move and many lay dead on the wire floor of the cage.

Since watching this video, I have discovered that several huge food companies such as Red Robin, Burger King, Sodexo and Aramark have made commitments to end their use of eggs from caged hens in favor of cage free alternatives. If they can do it, why can’t Costco? A friend told me that those cages are actually illegal in the whole of Europe and several states in the US. I can see why.

I urge your readers to join me in shopping elsewhere until this important problem is addressed and corrected. I will not fund such awful treatment of animals.
