The 189th Semiannual General Conference for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is nearly here, coming October 5th and 6th beginning at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. with the women’s session for sisters ages eight and older to follow on Saturday, October 5th at 6:00 p.m. mountain daylight time.
This is a wonderful opportunity when members of the Church gather together with their families, close friends and loved ones to hear the words of the prophet and other leaders of the Church. Many assemble in their own homes now that technology is so readily available to give us comfortable viewing and listening experiences. Throughout the entire year the talks and lessons learned can be easily accessed from www.lds.org
Invite others to join you in viewing conference. Particularly those from other faiths are welcome. Members are encouraged to invite others in person or through social media.
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said, “Let us prepare well for this great blessing of divine guidance delivered by His chosen servants.”
The General Auxiliary leaders spend much time and thought preparing to speak to members of the Church. How can we be prepared to listen to their message? We need to do our part to be ready to receive counsel and personal revelation so we can improve our lives and live more like our Heavenly Father.
Come Follow Me, a new curriculum established to give members of the Church a more home centered gospel setting, can be incorporated into your general conference preparations.
In the booklet, fall 2019 Conference Packet, purchased through Deseret Book for a minimal charge, you can find a handful of many ideas to do with your family to help you be prepared for general conference. It is a family packet for before, during, and after general conference. The packet aims to provide a pre-conference lesson, activities to do prior to conference and activities to do during conference as well as a post-conference lesson to help set goals for the following six months.
In the booklet on page 4 there are several questions we may want to ask ourselves and our family members:
For little children you can look for pictures of past prophets, those in the scriptures such as Noah, Lehi, Daniel, and Samuel the Lamanite. Allow family members to choose a selected picture (without anyone seeing) and have the other family members try to guess who the prophet is by asking yes or no questions.
For teens and adults, you can turn to the scriptures and find several regarding “the dispensation of the fulness of times” or what exactly does it mean when we hear the words, “gather together in one all things in Christ.” Share experiences with each other. Talk and discuss what this means to you.
There are coloring pages in the booklet along with further lessons. Included also, are tasty recipes to follow and share with your family. Recipes such as: A Croissant Breakfast Sandwich. Yum!
Of course, there is always General Conference Bingo! Choose words you think you might be hearing in general conference and write them in the empty squares. When you hear a word, place a marker of some sort or candy in the box.
However, you choose to prepare with your families, may you do so with the intentions to hear the word of the Lord and yearn to seek personal revelation for yourself or your family.
