The Willard 5th Ward went on a handcart trek with the young women and men on June 17– 20. This has been a very exciting few months preparing for this trip. The big question: “What did the pioneers wear?” This question and many others have been on the minds of these young people as they have prepared to go. Several web sites were used in prepping for the new adventure. (http://handcart-trek.org/clothing.html). There were requirements for this trek for the women: pioneer- style clothing items like pioneer skirt and petticoat, bonnets, and aprons, mid-calf length skirts (no denim), button-up blouses, capri leggings (under skirts). For the men: long work pants (no denim), button-up shirts, hat (similar to hats worn back then) & vest. Everything needed to fit in a 5 gallon bucket with the exception of the sleeping bag. All young men and women were to find an ancestor name, along with scriptures, journal & a pen. The biggest challenge was the “NO” list, which included a few of the following: cell phones, denim pants or skirts, baseball caps, make up, pillows, electronic devices; and, of course, the big one—bad attitudes. This was a chance of a lifetime to take a step back in time and experience a few of the things the pioneers did.
