35MM: A Musical Exhibition

35MM: A Musical Exhibition
Music and lyrics by Ryan Scott Oliver
Based on the photography of Matthew Murphy

With the click of a shutter, living moments become static photographs—a colorful bundle of balloons being carried down the street, the forced expression of a model posing for a portrait, two people facing away from one another in the night. For lyricist and songwriter Ryan Scott Oliver, a photo is only the beginning of a more vibrant story. Using the diverse work of photographer Matthew Murphy as inspiration, Oliver composed a song cycle that enlivens fifteen images through anecdotes, epiphanies, and digressions. These snapshot stories, as he calls them, combine to form a multisensory piece of musical theatre that pushes each medium it employs in moving and provocative ways.
