Special Olympics Utah and Utah High School Activities Association
host inaugural 2014 UNIFIED SOCCER STATE TOURNAMENT ON MAY 3
WHAT: Special Olympics Utah (SOUT) and the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) will host the 2014 Unified Soccer State High School Tournament at Hillcrest High School on Saturday, May 3. Approximately 144 student-athletes and 24 coaches will participate in the State championship.
Unified Sports®, a registered program of Special Olympics International, combines individuals with intellectual disabilities (athletes) and individuals without intellectual disabilities (partners) on sports teams for training and competition. The players compete side-by-side and all players serve as a meaningful and integral part of the Unified Sports® team.
In 2013, the Utah High School Activities Association and Special Olympics Utah created a partnership, Special Olympics Utah Unified Interscholastic Sports, to bring Unified Sports® to Utah's schools in spring 2014. Currently, Unified Soccer and Unified Track and Field are offered to Utah high school students in participating UHSAA member schools.
Through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education and general operating support, Special Olympics Utah has underwritten school expenses for participation in this first interscholastic Unified Sports® program in Utah.
