What will the real world fallout be for non-profit religious institutions from Obergfell v Hodges?
WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) will hold a press conference with representatives from religious non-profits who are concerned about how the Supreme Court’s upcoming gay marriage decision will affect their institutions.
During oral arguments on Obergfell v Hodges in April, Solicitor General Donald Verrilli admitted to Justice Samuel Alito that religious schools that do not accept a new definition of marriage will absolutely be in danger of losing their tax-exempt non-profit status.
“It’s certainly going to be an issue. I don’t deny that,” Verrilli said. “I don’t deny that, Justice Alito. It is it is going to be an issue.”
In light of this admission, Lee has been working with religious non-profits to understand the scope of this potential problem. The group will share statements and take questions from the media during the press event.
