One of Pleasant View's businesses, Lomond View Designs, was the spot where local citizens met Mrs. Jacqueline Smith, one of two Republican Candidates for Utah's 1st Congressional Seat - presently filled by Rob Bishop. On March 13th, Mrs. Smith and several other Republican candidates for Weber County, Utah, and Federal offices spoke for about 8 minutes each and answered questions posed by the audience. Presenters also included: State Senate candidates Dan Deuel, and Allan Christensen; State Representative candidates Brad Galvez and Ryan Wilcox; State Auditor candidate John Dougall; and Weber County Commission candidate Matthew Bell.
Mrs. Smith says that she isn't running because she likes politics, but because she feels the need to improve the way business is done in Washington. In particular, she disagrees with part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that was signed into law by President Obama on New Year's Eve, 2011. Her opponent in the race, Rob Bishop, voted for the NDAA. The parts of the NDAA that she vehemently opposes - give the President authority to detain American citizens indefinitely during times of emergency. Those citizens detained could be detained without the rights of habeas corpus - the right to appear before a judge in a court of law.
Mrs. Smith's message is that we live in a stage of history with challenges. The likelihood of dramatic change is high. If this cycle is similar to previous cycles, this stage could give way to better times, but Mrs. Smith believes that is something we must plan for and work for. Her number 1 priority in Congress will be to, "fix the National Debt." Regarding national defense, she says that she believes the ideas of George Washington and the founding fathers in that "our nation should be friendly to all, but have entangling alliances with none." For defense, she says that our nation's defense is first in importance.
