Willard—The search for a new Willard City Police Chief continues, with six prospects filing applications prior to the deadline. Former Chief Nate Thompson retired in July.
The State of Utah, Division of Forestry issued a fire restriction prohibiting fires of any kind, other than those in improved campgrounds, picnic areas, and permanently improved habitable areas in unincorporated private and public lands in Box Elder and Weber counties. Willard Police have closed the investigation into the death of 26 year-old Eric Lankford of Willard. The case has been sent to the Box Elder County Attorney Office for review, and determination of charges to be filed. The State Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death to be from smoke inhalation and burns. Eric Lankford's body was found in the garage portion of the home he shared with his brother, Jeremy Lankford. Police determined that the fire was set intentionally, however, they were unable to determine who set it. Jeremy Lankford was originally arrested for Obstruction of Justice; however, he posted bail on that charge, and reportedly left the state.
West Nile Virus was positively located in two test pools in Box Elder County already in 2014. Although no human cases have yet been found, state health officials advise that residents should take preventative steps to avoid being bitten. Mosquito repellant that contains DEET is reportedly safe for children as young as 2 months old. Also, sources of stagnant water should be emptied, if possible. The Aug 7th Planning Commission meeting consisted primarily the discussion of only two issues: the review of the general plan, in which Councilwoman Michelle Mund stated the need to “focus on being fair for all residents, rather than different standards for different people,” and secondly, the commission discussed changes to the Nuisance Ordinance. A hang up came in the wording on “construction equipment” being visible from a public street, alley, or adjoining property. Attorney Kevin McGaha said they would amend the ordinance to allow for equipment used for “aesthetics”.
The Planning Commission meets the first and third Thursday of each month at 6:30 PM. City Council meetings are the second and fourth Thursday of the month.
