Fish with a First Responder

Saturday, August 5, 2017 - 9:00am

Have you ever wanted to go fishing with your best friend, but they couldn’t go?  How about going with a policeman or firefighter instead?  Officer Glen Gammell, of Harrisville City, is excited to be part of this very idea. He says, “After several years of being in law enforcement I have some to realize there are very few financial support organizations to help the families of first responders in Utah.”

Heroes Supporting Heroes and Kids Through Wildlife is now announcing the 1st ANNUAL “FISH WITH A FIRST RESPONDER” fishing tournament!

9:00 a.m., August 5th, 2017 at the Harrisville City Park, 1350 North Highway 89. This day will include: a fishing tournament, raffles, silent auction, and vendor booths. There will also be a banquet for participants, the public and first responders. Awards will also be given for the tournament.

Money raised will go to support fallen or wounded first responder’s families and outdoor programs.

“Our Heroes who have been injured in the line of duty and who have made the ultimate sacrifice deserve our support,” says Gammell.

Over the years, Officer Gammell has donated his time to several organizations involving local youth and first responders; but, he wanted to do more.  He started to think about what might make a lasting impression on the youth while supporting the police officers and firefighters.

Thinking about his childhood, Gammell says, “The first thing that came to mind was when I was a kid and what kept me active and out of trouble was hunting, fishing, and the outdoors.  This taught me a lot about myself, ethics, and respect.”

One thing Gammell has learned, for himself, is that there are not very many programs in Utah geared towards helping kids get involved in the outdoors.

Gammell says, “I realized how great it would be to have a “Fish with a First Responder” fishing tournament.  This opportunity will allow our youth to connect with First Responders in our communities.”

These local children will get their own fishing gear, gift certificate for school supplies, and learn a great sport thus getting them out of the house and away from video games.

Gammell adds, “These first responders will teach the youth invaluable outdoor skills, leaving them with a positive lasting impression of our everyday heroes.”

Throughout the year a child will also be chosen for a once in a lifetime hunting and outdoor experience.  This trip will be an amazing experience to inspire, mentor and teach life skills through wildlife.

For information on nominating a child, sponsoring a fishing team, volunteering or if you are a first responder who would like to participate please email heroeskidsandoutdoors@gmail.com

Monetary donations can be made at any American First Credit Union under the name “Heroes Supporting Heroes & Kids Through Wildlife.”

Officer Gammell would like to thank the community and says, “We look forward to your involvement and support of our youth and first responders and thank them for their service.”
