Quilt Exhibit, Ruby Jubilee, Utah Quilt Guild

Friday, June 16, 2017 - 9:07am to Thursday, August 31, 2017 - 9:07am

Brigham City Museum of Art and History

presents

Utah Quilt Guild’s

Ruby Jubilee Exhibition

Jan. 28 through March 25, 2017

A kaleidoscope in fabric, minus the mirrors and bits of glass, awaits visitors to the Brigham City Museum during the Utah Quilt Guild’s Ruby Jubilee Exhibition Jan. 28 through March 25. Admission is free. More than 40 chapters in the guild, which is celebrating its 40th birthday, are represented in the exhibition. Barbara Walsh of Woodland Hills coordinated the event. Walsh, a past president of the guild, says, “Our organization is the first state quilting guild organized in America.”

The quilts in the exhibition are an optical, design phenomenon with their different shapes, textures, lines, depths, tones and space. Even though the quilts are all red and white, the reds differ in hue, saturation and brilliance.

Workmanship on a quilt varies from one person to round-robin participation. In one instance, a competition was held in one of the chapters, and the viewers’ choice was submitted for the exhibit.

.           Marathon sessions at sewing machines and long hours of hand-sewing produced quilts titled “Squiggles and Squares,” “English Ivy,” “Red Yo-yo Mania,“ “Joyful Poinsettias,” “French Quarter,” “Maple Mountains Celebration” and “Swiss Days,” to name a few.

The museum is located at 24 North 300 West. The entrance is on the west side. Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. For further information, please phone (435) 226-1439 or visit www.brighamcitymuseum.org.

A companion quilt exhibit, also organized by Walsh, will be on display March 16 through March 18 at Brigham City’s Community Presbyterian Church at 122 East 300 South. Quilts by guild and non-guild members will be on display.

The Utah Quilt Guild was formed by Betty Jean Chandler Christensen in 1977 to encourage, promote and preserve the art of quilt making in Utah.  As a child, Christensen, who was born in North Ogden, played under the quilting frames of her mother and her two grandmothers. As an adult, she collected antique quilts and their histories. Over time, Christensen began creating her own pieces. She lived long enough to see the UQG membership exceed 1,000. The quilter passed away in 2013 at age 89. Phyllis Owen of Brigham City was one of the 24 founding members. She passed away in 1996.

At the present time, there are about 900 members in the Utah Quilt Guild, and there are 21,000,000 quilters in the United States, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Ruby Jubilee is the first of two quilt exhibitions presented at the museum in 2017. Its International Quilt Invitational Exhibition opens June 16 and continues through Aug. 31.

Heritage Theatre presents: "Peter and the Starcatcher"

Friday, January 13, 2017 - 7:00pm to Tuesday, January 31, 2017 - 9:00pm

Attention everyone who has children, grandchildren or is a child at heart:
Before Wendy was born… before the legendary Captain Hook… before a boy was given the name Peter Pan…and before there was a Neverland, there was a Starcatcher Apprentice named Molly, a pirate named Black Stache, and a nameless orphan. In the story that comes before the one we all know, they are thrown together in a perilous (and wildly hilarious) adventure on the high seas. But, of course none of this actually exists, unless you are prepared to use your imagination.

In this coming-of-age tale three orphans find themselves on a ship bound for Rundoon. On that same ship, they meet Molly, who teaches these orphans the significance of bedtime stories, bravery, integrity, kindness and leadership. Along their adventure, they meet Black Stache, the most evil pirate captain on the seas. Captain Stache along with his cohort Smee, bumble their way along to get to the Queen’s treasure (God Save Her). Instead of gold and silver, this cast of 12 will help them to love, kindness, acceptance, home, and fulfillment. They find Neverland.

The play is based on the 2006 children's novel, Peter and the Starcatchers, written by Pulitzer Prize winner Dave Barry and humorist Ridley Pearson. The story was adapted by Rick Elice into an award-winning Broadway show. Peter and the Starcatcher won five Tony Awards along with eight other awards including; Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, Tina, Obie, and Broadway.com Audience Choice Award. Premiering on Broadway April 15, 2012, Peter and the Starcatcher ran for 319 performances and 18 previews.

Melanie Day teaches Theatre at Box Elder High School. Melanie has been involved in theatre since she was a little girl and has been directing for over two decades. “My parents took me to see Peter Pan with Mary Martin on Broadway when I was a child and I can still remember when she flew out over the audience and I could almost touch her. This delightful tale has been close to my heart ever since. Now as a mother I see the joy of childhood through a different lense and it is indeed magical. Peter and the Starcatcher tells how these ordinary people become the memorable characters we love. It also explores the importance of family, friendship and what we gain as we each grow up. I am thrilled to share this cast and this story! I can guarantee belly laughs, powerful thoughts, thrilling discovery and if you are anything like me a few tender tears along the way.” “This show doesn’t rely on flashy costumes, scenery and special effects, but instead focuses on a beautiful story being told by 12 incredible actors”

The Heritage Theater production of Peter and the Starcatcher features a talented cast with Adam Wheatley (of Brigham City) as Boy/Peter, Andrea Brandley (of Logan) as Molly, and Alan Smith (of Ogden) as Black Stache. Rounding out the cast are 9 ensemble members who make up the over 90 other characters including Ross Reeder (Perry), Bryce Day (Perry), Kam Klitgaard (Brigham City), Brock Cheney (Willard), Alex Patterson (Ogden), Jace Chadwick (Brigham City), Matt Payne (Brigham City), Caderik Wilson (Brigham City), and Chris Metz (Logan).

Production times will be as follows: Friday, Saturday and Monday nights at 7:30 starting on January 13th and running until January 30th. Special Matinees will be held on Saturday, January 21st and January 28th at 2:00PM. You can get tickets by visiting hertitagetheaterutah.com/boxoffice.html or call 435-723-8392 Monday, Wednesday-Saturday from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
