How Utah can change the conversation about domestic violence

How Utah can change the conversation about domestic violence

On Monday October 20th the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition is inviting the public to a free screening of one of the most powerful documentaries to come out of this year’s Sundance collection.

“Private Violence” is a feature length film that follows the experience of two survivors of domestic violence and shines a light on a deeply disturbing fact – that the most dangerous place in America for a woman is her own home. Every day in the US, at least four women are murdered by abusive (and often, ex) partners. The knee-jerk response is to ask: “why doesn’t she just leave?” Private Violence shatters the brutality of this logic and

begins to shape powerful, new questions that hold the potential to change our society: “Why does he abuse?” “Why do we turn away?” “How do we begin to build a future without domestic violence?”

Kendra Wyckoff, Executive Director of the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition, encourages everyone to come to the screening. “Recent research from the Department of Health indicates that between 2000 – 2013 42.9% of all adult homicides here in the state of Utah were related to domestic violence. There is still a culture of silence that surrounds domestic violence, it is still treated as a “family” matter or a “private” matter and when society does ask questions they often blame the victim for what is happening rather than holding the perpetrator of the abuse accountable for their own actions. Come and watch this film and learn why we cannot stay silent any longer and what may really be going on behind closed doors.”

RC Willey to Hold Second Annual Great Pumpkin Giveaway

Families invited to visit any RC Willey Store on October 20, and pick up a free Halloween pumpkin while supplies last

SALT LAKE CITY – Oct. 16, 2014 – RC Willey, one of America’s top home furnishing retailers, is inviting families to visit any of its locations in Utah on Monday, Oct. 20, to pick up a free pumpkin. Thousands of pumpkins will be available at every store for the retailer’s Great Pumpkin Give Away while supplies last.

At the same time, RC Willey is kicking off its annual food donation drive in Utah. The furniture retailer is inviting the community to bring non-perishable food items to any RC Willey location on Oct. 20 and throughout December. One hundred percent of the food collected will be donated to the Utah Food Bank.

Dave Cook, vice president of RC Willey, proudly moonlights as a pumpkin farmer in Syracuse, Utah. Cook created the pumpkin giveaway in 2013 when he and other local farmers had thousands of pumpkins left over after grocers had their pick from the harvest. He made them available at the Syracuse store. This year, the furniture retailer expanded the Great Pumpkin Give Away to all of its stores.

“All of our stores look forward to welcoming neighbors and friends who drop by RC Willey for a free Halloween pumpkin during the Great Pumpkin Giveaway,” said Cook. “And this year we’re also welcoming donations of canned goods that will be distributed to families who are struggling to make ends meet. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

For more information visit RC Willey on Facebook or call your local RC Willey store found at www.RCWilley.com.

Utah responds to call to “CHOOSE TO CHERISH”

The Utah Domestic Violence Coalition will officially launch its new public awareness campaign, “Choose to Cherish”, this Friday October 17 as the focal point of its domestic violence awareness month activities.

In 2013, there were at least 23 domestic violence related deaths in Utah and for the last five years the rate of domestic violence in Utah continues to surpass the national average.

“Choose to Cherish is a campaign and action that everyone can participate in. We all have a role to play in ending domestic violence and by standing together as communities, and a state, we can create lasting social change”, explained Kendra Wyckoff, Executive Director of the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition. “On Friday October 17th community leaders from across the state will stand together with us and publicly pledge that they will make an active choice to cherish their family, friends, neighbors and community. We hope that they will carry this same message back to their communities and that others in our state will make the same choice and help support Utah in becoming the safest state in the nation for families. ”

Senator Lee commented, “Choosing to cherish our loved ones is at the heart of Utah values. I applaud the efforts of the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition to remind us that we must protect our families from any type of abuse or mistreatment.
