The criminal justice bill still ignores intent

Last fall, a group of senators introduced legislation to reduce prison sentences for various drug and firearm offenses and to enable prisoners to earn credit toward early release. Almost immediately, the bill ran into opposition from critics who worried it would let dangerous criminals out of jail and reverse the decades-long nationwide drop in crime.

Washington, D.C.—Senators Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., along with Representatives Dave Reichert, R-Wash., and Bill Pascrell Jr., D-N.J., introduced a bill today to protect probation officers and enhance their ability to do their job by giving them authority to arrest a third party who forcibly interferes with an officer’s performance of his or her official duties.
