Box Elder High

Friday, February 19, 2016 - 4:15pm

The annual Choral Foundation Concert will take place on Tuesday, Feb 23, at 7:00 pm in the Box Elder High School Auditorium.  For this event, choirs from Box Elder and Bear River combine to work with and learn from  a “top gun” guest conductor.  The event culminates with a concert featuring the two schools combining without the typical sports rivalry.  This year’ guest conductor is Cory Mendenhall, whose bio appears below:     Cory J. Mendenhall graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelors of Choral Music Education in 2003 and a earned a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting from Brigham Young University in 2011. While attending USU he studied Choral Conducting and Literature with Dr. Will Kesling, and Organ Performance with Dr. James Drake.  During graduate work at BYU, he studied under the tutelage of Dr. Ronald Staheli, Rosalind Hall and Jean Applonie, was the Graduate Assistant Conductor of the BYU Men’s Chorus, and co-directed the BYU University Chorale.

Mr. Mendenhall enjoyed a successful tenure as director of Choral Activities and Performing Arts Department Chair at Provo High School from 2003-2009. During his six-year tenure, the choral ensembles consistently earned superior ratings in regional and state festivals.  In March 2009, the PHS Chamber Singers were recognized for their standing-ovation performance in New York City’s Carnegie Hall as the featured choir in the National High School Choral Festival, under the direction of Field Studies International. Mr. Mendenhall was the 2005 PHS Teacher of the Year and the 2009 recipient of Provo School District’s prestigious “Crystal Apple Award."   Mr. Mendenhall has served as the Choral Vice-President of the Utah Music Educator’s Association.   He has also served as a director with the Utah Ambassadors of Music, traveling and conducting on the group’s  2013 European tour.

Since 2009, Mendenhall has served as the Choral Director and Fine Arts Department Chair at Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork.   In addition to his work at Maple Mountain, Mr. Mendenhall serves as Associate Dean and Conductor of the newly established Utah Valley Millennial Choirs and Orchestra.  He also serves as organist for the Missionary Training Center in Provo.   He and his wife, Aprel are  the parents of four children: Leah, Nicholas, Miranda, and Mallory Mae.
