Thanks for your help us make this year’s senior highlight the BEST ever.

We are looking for new parent members to serve on the 2016-2017 School Community Council next year.  If you are interested in serving, please contact Teri Basinger at 734-4840 to have your name placed on the ballot.

School Safety is a priority at Box Elder High School.  This year we began locking the west doors at the end of the classrooms and the main door on the south of the building to limit access and increase safety.  With this focus in mind, we will be sending our front office and counseling center secretaries to a training entitled “Front Desk Safety & Security”.  There they will learn how to assess dangerous situations, ways to respond to natural disasters and human threats, techniques for defusing escalated situations and unreasonable demands, and ways to identify a threat.  This is just one more piece added to our Safety Plan this year.  Keeping parents informed of our safety efforts is important to us.

PLEASE CHECK IN AT THE OFFICE WHEN YOU ENTER THE SCHOOL.

Yearbooks can be purchased at the school for $51.00.  Preordered books will be sold until they are gone. Cash and check only

Dear Parents and Staff, Since the announcement of Mr. Obama’s decree on bathroom accessibility and the corresponding letter from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights outlining guidance in regard to accommodations for transgender student use of restrooms and locker rooms in public schools, we have had questions as to whether we plan to comply in Box Elder School District Box Elder School District plans to continue our practice as is presently constituted.   We do not plan to grant access to restrooms and locker rooms that are specifically designated by gender to anyone other than the actual gender.   This will be the practice that has been observed in the district since long before this political issue came to the forefront.   We will continue to work with individual students and parents who have unique requirements on a case by case basis.  We will continue to treat each and every student with the respect and dignity they deserve.  At no time do we intend to sacrifice the rights of the general population of students for political reasons.  We do not believe that Mr. Obama has the moral nor bureaucratic authority to issue such a far reaching  federal directive.  For your convenience I have included a message we received from the Interim State Superintendent of Schools.    Dr. Ron Tolman, Superintendent Box Elder School District Brigham City, Utah 84302 Ph 435-734-4800

Subject: Response to U.S. Departments of Education and Justice Release of Joint Guidance to Ensure the Civic Rights of Transgender Students Education Leaders,

On May 13, 2016, the Utah State Board of Education and local education agencies (LEAs) throughout the state received a letter from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights outlining guidance in regard to accommodations for transgender student use of restrooms and locker rooms in public schools.

The State Board is not providing a directive on this topic to LEAs and does not necessarily expect a change in current practices or behavior. We anticipate you will continue accommodating the needs of individual students according to your local policies and procedures. As you are aware, many of these cases necessitate action on a case-by-case basis, and LEAs know best how to move forward with unique solutions. The State Board believes local schools are best equipped to meet the needs of students with sensitivity and timeliness. We appreciate the concern you take when considering individual circumstances and trust you to make the safety of each student a priority.

With appreciation,

Sydnee Dickson
