Box Elder County – Parents ban together to form the first Public Charter School (K-8) in Perry, Utah. Unlike other alternative forms of classrooms, The Promontory School is a tuition-free Charter school that keeps a traditional school year schedule; no more than 25 students, in a 2 class per grade curriculum. Parents are allowed a higher degree of involvement and say in their children’s education. Students learn with fieldwork, expeditions and experiments. Students also wear uniforms to encourage culture and simplicity. This labor of love was born with countless hours from a volunteer-based community of parents and local leaders that decided to take action and create a disciplined, yet nurturing place of learning. “I love options,” Kassi Capener, Board Trustee. “It’s our job to fuel passion for learning…My child comes home wanting to….apply what he’s learned and discover more.”
Expeditionary learning also brings field experts into the classroom allowing children the unique opportunity to gain a real-life perspective so they can grow and give back to their communities in the future by applying their knowledge to the masses; While journeying through their grade school years, students are encouraged to investigate and sharpen their skills through community projects and service. Expeditionary learning is a nationally recognized school model, designed to promote critical thinking skills and academic achievement.
Saturday, August 11, 2012, at 10:00 am, a joyous and celebratory Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will set this progressive educational revolution into motion. Future and hopeful students will be there to tour the building for the first time and the Promontory Student Choir, ages 5 to 13 will perform to fuel the fire. Interviews and visuals are available at any time from the ribbon cutting through the new school year.
