I would like to write about the mediocrity of the Common Core standards themselves, outlining how they do not prepare student adequately for 4-year colleges, using the testimonies of educational experts and members of the Common Core validation committee. I also could write about the lack of legislative input, the tremendous costs to taxpayers, and the lack of meaningful public awareness of what Common Core is. I could write about what the Governor has told us in a face to face meeting about the standards, as he is reviewing them and comparing legally binding documents to what Arne Duncan told him in a letter. I could write about the data collection --of children's nonacademic as well as academic data-- that is now legally up for perusal by the federal government without parental consent due to recent changes in federal FERPA regulations. I could write about what's been happening in Wasatch County with revisions to FERPA policy by our local school board. I could write about what the state school board has been doing and plans to do. I could write about the statewide petition, http://utahnsagainstcommoncore.com and what petitioners have been saying to those of us who helped create the site.
