Whitespace Art Gallery features "Invisible Things"

A exhibit focused on human invention, environment and progress through networks of industrial theme.

Featuring artists: Molly Morin & Stephen Wolochowicz

MOLLY MORIN uses traditional and digital methods to produce work that explores the difficult relationship between information and meaning. Her projects visualize data sets and prod at notions of accuracy and usefulness, while reflecting on the impact of information technology on daily life.

STEPHEN WOLOCHOWICZ's work is a commentary to our connectedness to a greater whole. Some parts evoke positive responses while others may not. However, they are all linked. Through viewer’s interaction with my ‘Parts’ I am attaching a human component to our industrialized system, or world. By this, I am suggesting we are linked to the unseen, unknown systems and aspects of our entire industrialized economy, regardless of our awareness.

Sundance Film Festival presents "Don Verdean"

Don Verdean is a man of faith who has devoted his life to biblical archaeology, scouring the globe in search of artifacts that back up the teachings of Jesus Christ. Now, traveling from town to town, he and his devoted assistant, Carol, spread the gospel by peddling books and DVDs out of his shabby RV while his Holy Land contacts, Boaz and Shem, do the digging from afar. When evangelical preacher Tony Lazarus offers to bankroll Don’s modest roadside operation, the escalating pressure to find increasingly significant relics leads Don and his team down a less-than-righteous path. With more than just the word of God on the line, Don finds himself in the midst of a spiteful feud between two opposing congregations, leaving him to question what is truly important in life.

With a fantastic ensemble cast in tow, director Jared Hess returns to the Sundance Film Festival with this hilarious and biting satire that explores the thin line between faith and fabrication.

Actors - Sam Rockwell; Jemaine Clement; Amy Ryan; Danny McBride; Leslie Bibb; Will Forte

Sundance Film Festival presents "A Walk in the Woods"

When an aging travel writer sets out to hike the 2,100-mile-long Appalachian Trail with a long-estranged high school buddy, the duo learn that some roads are better left untraveled.

Robert Redford and Nick Nolte, two icons of cinema, are a perfect comedic pair, bringing their characters to life with exceptional nuance. As the two face off with each other and an eccentric assortment of characters, the grand trail proves to be an epic journey. Emma Thompson brilliantly counterbalances their antics as the patient companion, wise enough to let them go on this ill-conceived journey. As moving as it is playful, A Walk in the Woods proves that amid the glory of stunning vistas and Appalachian wildlife, the untamed human condition can be just as formidable.

Actors - Robert Redford; Nick Nolte; Emma Thompson; Mary Steenburgen; Nick Offerman; Kristen Schaal

Sundance Film Festival presents "Digging for Fire"

Young married couple Tim and Lee have planted the seeds of a family in their East LA duplex. Three years after the birth of their son, they’re still adjusting to the joy and pain of life with kid, navigating potty talk at the dinner table, disagreeing over preschools, and putting off doing their taxes. For a change of pace, they decide to housesit for one of Lee’s Westside yoga clients. Once there, Tim discovers something suspicious in the yard that gets the wheels in his head turning, and Lee, worried that he will become obsessed with digging deeper, decides to drop their toddler off with her mother for a much-needed night out on the town. Sans-wife, Tim invites his buddies over, and a “boys-will-be-boys” scenario ensues, full of drinking, awkward joint-passing, and perhaps getting a bit too close to a girl who isn’t the mother of his child.

Sundance Film Festival presents "Brooklyn"

Set on opposite sides of the Atlantic, John Crowley’s Brooklyn tells the profoundly moving story of Ellis Lacey, a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Ellis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Ellis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Ellis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.

Based on Colm Toibin’s acclaimed novel, director Crowley and writer Nick Hornby craft a deeply effective, sweeping romance. The sumptuous filmmaking vividly depicts a rapidly progressing world. Surrounded by a stellar cast of supporting characters, Saoirse Ronan gives a captivating performance as the luminous Ellis. The heart of this highly accomplished work evokes a timeless portrait of leaving home and the excruciating decisions one must make.

Sundance Film Festival presents "Prophet's Prey"

When noted author Jon Krakauer stumbled upon a closed polygamous community in southern Utah in 1999, it caught him by surprise. Private investigator Sam Brower (whose 2011 book shares the film’s name) was already investigating the rogue sect known as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints (FLDS). Here the two men share their alarming allegations of sexual abuse, underage marriages and pregnancies. Collaborating with a local Texas journalist who first reported the story, they retrace their involvement that led to the capture and conviction of the group’s maniacal leader, Warren Jeffs.

Gripping first-person accounts from former members and descendants of FLDS leadership paint a harrowing portrait where women are property and men are forced to comply with the oppressive guidelines or face expulsion from their own families. Veteran director Amy Berg’s sobering examination of current religious indoctrination is a chilling reminder of the danger of a tyrannical "prophet's" unchecked power.

Sundance Film Festival presents "Mississippi Grind"

Gerry is a talented poker player, but his gambling habit is getting the best of him. One day, he meets a charismatic young traveler named Curtis. Deeming Curtis his lucky charm, Gerry convinces him that they should hit the road together. As they gamble their way down South toward a legendary high-stakes poker game in New Orleans, the trip’s highs and lows unveil the duo’s true character and motivation, and an undeniable bond forms between them.

Writer/directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck return to the Sundance Film Festival (Half Nelson, Sugar) with an intoxicating story of compulsive gamblers that flawlessly captures the seedy world of small-time losers and dreamers. The film’s atmosphere of frenzied hope and paranoia at the various racetracks, bars, and casinos is suffused with an evocative soundtrack and enlivened by two pitch-perfect performances. Ryan Reynolds shines as the confident, jocular Curtis. But the film’s true revelation is Ben Mendelsohn, who, as Gerry, is finally given a leading role in an American film and crushes it. Mississippi Grind instantly joins the classic canon of films about gambling.

Actors - Ryan Reynolds; Ben Mendelsohn; Sienna Miller; Analeigh Tipton; Alfre Woodard; Robin Weigert

Sundance Film Festival presents "Racing Extinction"

Louie Psihoyos's The Cove (2009 Sundance Film Festival, U.S. Documentary Audience Award) exposed viewers to the brutal practice of dolphin slaughter. The Academy Award-winning director now bears witness to a global problem—mankind's role in precipitating mass extinction, potentially resulting in the loss of half of the world's species.

Believing that images can stimulate empathy and in turn change behavior, Psihoyos joins forces with activists, scientists, nature photographers, and cutting-edge inventors to draw attention to the dangers we face. While covert operations reveal the horrific black-market trade in endangered aquatic species, the film's broader lens uncovers the even more disastrous consequences of human activity, chiefly the release of ocean-killing methane and carbon from energy consumption.

With stakes as high as the survival of life on the planet, Racing Extinction dispenses with apathy or fatalism to emerge as an urgent, affirming call to action to stem the tide before it's too late.

Sundance Film Festival presents "The End of the Tour"

In 1996, shortly after the publication of his groundbreaking novel Infinite Jest, acclaimed author David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel) sets off on a five-day interview with Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg). As the days pass, a tenuous yet significant relationship develops between journalist and subject. Lipsky and Wallace bob and weave around each other, revealing as much in what they don’t say as what the say. They share laughs, expose hidden frailties, yet it’s never clear when or to what extent they are being truthful. The interview is never published. Five days of audio tapes are packed away in Lipsky’s closet, and the two men never meet again.

The End of the Tour is based on Lipsky’s critically acclaimed memoir about this unforgettable encounter that he wrote following Wallace’s suicide in 2008.

Deeply emotional, insightful performances from Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg lay bare a heartbreaking screenplay by Pulitzer-Prize winner Donald Margulies. Directed with humor and tenderness by Sundance Film Festival veteran James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now, Smashed) and befitting the troubled soul of Wallace himself, The End of the Tour is profound, surprising, and compellingly human.

Actors - Jesse Eisenberg; Jason Segel; Anna Chlumsky; Joan Cusack; Mamie Gummer; Mickey Sumner

Sundance Film Festival presents "Stockholm, Pennsylvania"

A young woman is reunited with her parents, Marcy and Glen, after being abducted 17 years earlier. Raised in a suburban basement and renamed Leia by her kidnapper, Ben, she was told the outside world had come to an end, and now she must completely reconceive her perception of it. The bright 22-year-old is also forced to reconcile her new life with parents who are virtual strangers and her past life of captivity with Ben, on whom she was completely dependent. As Leia’s growing alienation leads to her longing for Ben, Marcy slowly implodes in her attempts to reclaim her child, and the notion of what it is to be free is called into question.

In a haunting, nuanced performance, Saoirse Ronan is quietly spellbinding as a young woman whose entire basis of knowledge is shattered and her concept of home erased. Writer/director Nikole Beckwith, in an impressive debut feature, strips away the sensational tabloid fodder of the narrative to examine the origins of self, identity, and the power of language.

Actors - Saoirse Ronan; Cynthia Nixon; Jason Isaacs; David Warshofsky

Sundance Film Festival presents "'71"

Yann Demange’s boldly cinematic debut feature has played to overwhelming acclaim since premiering at the Berlinale.

A young British soldier, Private Hook (Jack O’Connell) is deployed to the urban war zone of Belfast, Northern Ireland—a region divided between Protestant unionists and Catholic nationalists. When his regiment enters a Catholic neighborhood and an angry riot breaks out, Hook is inadvertently left behind. Plunged into a nightmarish no-man’s-land where the distinction between friend and foe blurs, Hook struggles to simply survive the night.

Working from Gregory Burke’s superb screenplay and aided by a relentless visual energy, dissonant score, and ever-escalating tension, Demange constructs an unsettling, increasingly surreal aesthetic that beautifully echoes Hook’s disorientation and captures the tangled web of political intrigues, convoluted factions, and shifting alliances behind The Troubles. Pursued by rival republican paramilitary factions, his own army, and Ulster commanders using him to engineer a battle within the IRA, Hook is just a pawn (or as one character says, “a piece of meat”) in the larger folly of war.

Actors - Jack O'Connell; Paul Anderson; Richard Dormer; Sean Harris; Barry Keoghan; Martin McCann
