CELEBRATE SAFE KIDS DAY & HEALTHY KIDS DAY AT NEWGATE MALL

Saturday, May 14, 2016 - 10:00am

CELEBRATE SAFE KIDS DAY & HEALTHY KIDS DAY AT NEWGATE MALL

Ogden, Utah ––Join us for Safe Kids Day and Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, May 14th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Newgate Mall, 3651 Wall Ave. Ogden, UT. This year, The Safe Kids Weber-Morgan Coalition has partnered with the YMCA of Northern Utah to merge Safe Kids Day with the Y’s Healthy Kids Day to create one big free community event.  More than 5,000 participants are estimated to attend this year. Attendees will enjoy fun activities and educational booths that start outside the mall behind the Burlington Coat Factory and continue throughout the inside of the mall.

“We are excited about our new partnership and sponsors this year. Newgate Mall is a great location providing lots of room for both inside and outside activities,” says coalition coordinator Elisabeth Hansen. “Many of the activities are geared toward learning new ways parents and children can learn together to prevent injuries and lead safer, healthier, and happier lives,” says Angela Voraotsady Community Engagement Manager for YMCA of Northern Utah.

Safe Kids Day & Healthy Kids Day is jam packed with prizes and giveaways. Each kid that attends will receive a Sponsor Passport that will be stamped at each of our dedicated sponsors’ booths. Participants that collect all of the stamps will receive a special prize. Organizers will have 200 kids bike helmets for 5$ while supplies last (cash only and children must be present when purchased). There will also be free kids t-shirts available to the first 500 kids who attend.

On top of great giveaways you can also expect to be entertained.  The event will feature fun activities like building mini projects with Home Depot, learning about home fire safety at Life Safety Trailer and opportunities to practice bike, pedestrian, ATV safety and more.  You will also find stage shows performed by Ballet Folklórico Newára, and a visit from Star Wars characters that will host Jedi Training from 1:00 pm -1:20 pm followed by a meet and greet that will run until 2:30 pm.

All of the effort that has gone into creating Safe Kids Day and Healthy Kids day has been done to help prevent preventable child injuries and to help keep kids happy and healthy.  Jann Fawcett Coalition Coordinator said, “Preventable injuries are the #1 killer of kids in the U.S. and each year a million families around the world lose a child to these injuries. Through this event, we celebrate kids, raise awareness about how to prevent injuries, promote healthy living and the little things we can all do to make sure kids grow up to do big things.”

The events key sponsors include Zero Fatalities, Ogden Clinic, Intermountain McKay–Dee Hospital, Weber-Morgan Health Department, Safe Kids Weber-Morgan Coalition, the YMCA of Northern Utah, the Newgate Mall, Standard Examiner, SelectHealth and many other supporting organizations. For additional information visit facebook.com/safekidswebermorgan or visit www.ymcautah.org/healthykidsday

About Healthy Kids Day

Summer is the time for kids to get up, get out and grow. But for some kids, exposure to activities that stimulate the body and mind ends with the school year. In fact, research shows that kids are prone to gain weight and fall behind in studies. On April 14th, the Y will celebrate Healthy Kids Day®, our national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids.

Utah Division of Water Resources to Launch H2Oath: Utah’s Water-Wise Pledge

Tuesday, May 10, 2016 - 10:00am

Utah Division of Water Resources to Launch

H2Oath: Utah’s Water-Wise Pledge

What

Utah Division of Water Resources (DWRe) will launch a water conservation campaign called “H2Oath: Utah’s Water-wise Pledge” to encourage additional water conservation efforts by families, businesses, government agencies and statewide organizations. The H2Oath is designed to commit individuals and groups to conserve more by following the division’s Weekly Lawn Watering Guide throughout the watering season, and making several other water conservation commitments.

Pledging their support to kick off the campaign is the University of Utah, an institution that swells to the size of a mid-size city each day and is considered one of the largest water users in the Salt Lake Valley. The Nature Conservancy and Trout Unlimited, two of Utah’s foremost environmental and sustainability advocacy organizations, have also pledged their support. Additionally, representative from the state’s four largest water conservancy districts will participate by taking the pledge. Central Utah, Jordan Valley, Weber Basin and Washington County water conservancy districts provide water to 85 percent of Utah’s population.

Why

Snowpack this year has been average to slightly below average statewide. However, ordinary precipitation will not correct the long-term drought conditions Utah has been experiencing for the past several years. Runoff and river flow conditions are expected to be below average as dry soil conditions require more moisture. Utah’s population is also projected to more than double by 2060. Meeting future needs will require additional conservation. As we work toward reaching Governor Herbert’s goal to conserve 25 percent more water by 2025, we applaud Utahns for their water-wise efforts. We also recognize more needs to be done.

When

Tuesday, May 10, 2016 from 10 to 10:45 a.m.

The Conservation Garden Park also models the best use of water in Utah by showcasing landscapes suited for Utah’s unique climate that are beautiful and easier to maintain.

Presenter for this event

Bruce H. Porter earned his bachelor's degree in Ancient Near Eastern Studies from BYU and went on to receive his master's degree in Middle East Studies with an emphasis in Semitic languages.  His Doctorate work is in the field of History of Religions, with emphasis in Egyptian religion and textual studies, and a minor in Anthropology.

Brother Porter has done extensive research for the Religious Studies Center on the Pearl of Great Price and the Book of Abraham as well as in major museums and libraries of Europe and the United States.  He has presented papers for the Society for Early Historic Archaeology and the Journal of  Egyptian Archaeology.  Brother Porter co-authored a paper with Stephen Ricks published in By Study and Also By Faith, a two-volume work honoring the late Hugh Nibley.  During his graduate work, he assisted in the writing of a documentary on Egyptian archaeology and worked as a technical director on the film.  Now semi-retired,  he is a sought after speaker.

Brother Porter belies the popular image of the staid, distant professor type.  He is affable, approachable, humorous, pre-eminently knowledgeable- and total focused on making your time with him informative, fun and memorable.  He makes people feel at ease and keeps them wanting more.  Ask him questions and you can expect real answers in return.  Happy and satisfied defines the many fortunate people who have completed tours with him or attended his presentations.

In essence, nobody does it better than Bruce Porter - author, scholar, and presenter.
