Dear Editor

Dear Editor

Thank Heaven for a US Supreme Court that unanimously recognizes the validity of State law and the consideration that must be given to activist decisions which attempt to overturn it.

Judge Shelby made a mistake in what he did.  States' rights are paramount in matters such as this, and must be carefully viewed. "32" States have similar laws prohibiting homosexual marriages, so Utah is not uniquely alone.

Dave Say's

Dear Dave,

My wife and I make about $100,000 a year. We have $63,000 in the bank, and we owe $47,000 on our home. The house is worth about $250,000, and it’s our only debt. We’d like to go ahead and pay off the house, but we’re worried about depleting our savings to that extent. What would you do?

Dear Dave,

What would you recommend for 401(k) contributions while getting out of debt?

Chaz

Dear Chaz,

I recommend putting a temporary stop to investing while you’re getting out of debt. Lots of people are shocked by this advice, because they’re afraid of missing out on the wonders of compound interest or their employer’s match. But the key word here is “temporary.”

Dear Editor

Dear Editor;

I know that in Salt Lake, Ogden, and Provo, there is an inversion problem this winter. The No-Burn policy is a good start but we can do better. Here are some ideas that I have come up with.

One thing that we can do is to, during the winter, to make the UTA or other Public Transportation systems free or lower priced during business hours. It would lower pollution levels and encourage more people to use trains or buses.

Big or Little – Government that is

North Ogden City residents are still wrestling with the question about how much to spend on a new public works building. Should the city bond for the building and increase the debt load and corresponding tax burden on the citizens? Should the city establish a “pay-as-you-go” philosophy and reduce the debt burden?

Wards Were Political Republics

Thomas Jefferson was a well known statesman during the founding of America.  Probably more than any we know, he epitomizes the idea of individual and local choice. He promoted “ward republics”. Wikipedia indicates that the concept of hundreds became the colonial idea of wards.

Annexation—History in the Making

It seems almost natural to join the two communities of Willard and South Willard. Residents share educational systems, religious facilities and recreational venues. They even share part of the same name. So why are there questions and debate regarding whether to annex South Willard, the southern portion of Box Elder County, which is separated from the rest of unincorporated Box Elder County, into incorporated Willard City?
