Everest College Instructor Presents Motivating the Adult Learner at Denver’s 45th Annual National Surgical Technologists Conference

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – May 2014 –  Those fresh out of high school aren’t the only students pursuing higher education. The fact is there are over four million adult learners enrolled at private sector institutions across the country. Sugey Briones, Everest College’s surgical technologist program director in Salt Lake City, knows these learners and has been teaching them for over three years. Most importantly, she knows how to meet the specific needs adult learners require in the classroom.

“Adults who return to the classroom or who may be reluctantly taking a new class after many years away, need to feel valued, they need to know their views and opinions are appreciated, and they need to feel their voices will be heard,” said Briones.

Briones, a certified surgical technologist who also holds a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, will share these and other insights at the 45th Annual National Surgical Technologists Conference, May 26 – 30, in Denver. Her presentation, Motivating the Adult Learner, focuses on how instructors can have successful outcomes in the classroom by incorporating a few simple techniques.

A few of Briones’ techniques include being well prepared and diverse in teaching methods. She also believes instructors need to be tech savvy, positive and inspirational.

“Ultimately the best way to work with adults in the classroom is to respect the fact that they are essentially your equals,” she said.  “It is really about creating a mutual respect and fostering a renewed ‘love of learning’ in the classroom.”
