On May 16th and 17th songwriters will have the opportunity to learn from industry pros

Friday, May 16, 2014 - 8:00am to Saturday, May 17, 2014 - 8:00pm

A rare opportunity coming May 16th-17th for local musicians at a seminar featuring an LA hit songwriter, Tim Fagan (co-writer along with Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat of Grammy winning song, “Lucky"), Nashville music publisher, Bobby Rymer (publisher of 2013 Grammy nominated, “So You Don’t Have To Love Me Anymore”), and entertainment attorney, John Rolfe (who represents The Bellamy Brothers).

Provo, Utah (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE) On May 16th and 17th songwriters will have the opportunity to learn from industry pros, John Rolfe (entertainment lawyer), Tim Fagan (Grammy award-winning songwriter), and Bobby Rymer (Nashville publisher), what it takes to be successful in the music business. Rolfe will be covering a wide array of topics from revenue streams to what to look for in contracts. Seminar attendees will also have the chance to play an original song and receive constructive feedback from Fagan and Rymer. To register, visit http://refinementrecords.com.

Brian Bingham, of Sandy, Utah, spoke of a past seminar experience, "Getting to perform for such esteemed professionals was a treat enough but to have my song critiqued was something special. I learned a lot about the music business and about writing songs to sell. I learned how to refine my songs from their raw state. It was very exciting.”

The weekend seminar will be held from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Friday, May 16th, and 10:00 am to 9:00 pm on Saturday, May 17th at Refinement Productions’ studio, 1043 E 2620 N, Provo, Utah.  Early bird registration is $125 before May 1st, $150 after May 1st and $175 if the day of.

Tim Fagan, who’s collaborated with John Mayer on the song “Deeper,” and toured the world as music director and lead guitarist for Colbie Caillat, along with Bobby Rymer will be the guest celebrity judges at the All Star Open Mic on Friday, May 16th from 8-10 pm. Ten seminar attendees will perform original songs, receive feedback, and have the chance to get their songs in a publisher’s hands. The winner goes home with a cash prize of $250. Fagan will also be performing an “unplugged” concert Saturday evening, May 17th for seminar attendees.

Taylor Olson, from Los Angeles, CA, said, “The seminars at Refinement Productions gave me the opportunity to have one-on-one interactions with industry professionals I would normally never have access to. I now have a continuing relationship with them and have been able to build off of their contacts. I recommend taking advantage of any networking opportunity you can get because as you've surely heard, it's all about relationships!”

Interviews with the industry pros are available upon request.

About Tim Fagan

Two years touring the world as music director and lead guitarist for Colbie Caillat has given Tim Fagan a lot to be grateful for. In between the long flights and pre-show warm ups backstage, he wrote several songs with Caillat, including the Jason Mraz duet "Lucky", a 2010 Grammy Winner. "Finishing a song while on the road can be a fun challenge," Fagan says of the effort. "It was like musical ping pong - Jason, Colbie and I sent Garageband mp3s back and forth until all the pieces fell into place." A similar process unfolded in Tim's collaboration with John Mayer on the soulful ballad "Deeper." Mayer published a batch of lyrics, eventually set to music written by Fagan. Upon receiving Tim's finished version of the song, Mayer commented in Esquire magazine, "his composition is a string of events laid out so that there's always something else to look forward to, namely a nice blues-guitar solo at the end." Now based in Los Angeles, he's working on new music with breaking artists and writers through his production company Daydreamer Music.

About Bobby Rymer

Bobby Rymer is a partner in the Nashville-based music publishing company Writer’s Den Music Group. One of the unique aspects of Writer’s Den was the fact that it was the first publishing deal for the first five writers signed to the company. Among the cuts secured were multiple songs by Alan Jackson (including the 2013 Grammy nominated song, “So You Don’t Have To Love Me Anymore”), Lee Ann Womack, Ricky Skaggs, Randy Owen and Joe Nichols, plus the critically acclaimed song (“Not Cause I Wanted To”) on the 2013 Grammy winning Album, Slipstream by Bonnie Raitt. In addition, the company has landed a number of Film/TV placements as well as cuts in Canada, Europe, South America and Australia.

About John Rolfe

John Rolfe is an entertainment attorney with his own law firm of Rolfe Entertainment Law. His career in the music industry began with a business affairs position at the historic music publishing company, Acuff-Rose where he was responsible for domestic and international contract negotiations and litigation management.  While at Acuff-Rose, John was involved with the signing of several prominent songwriter/artists and helped to ensure copyright protection for the company's interest in songs from legendary songwriters such as Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, the Everly Brothers, Don Gibson and Roy Acuff. He currently represents Steve Cropper (“Sittin on the Dock of the Bay”), The Bellamy Brothers (“If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body”), and several other Hall of Fame songwriters; represents several music publishers and independent record labels including R Legacy Entertainment and Writer’s Den Music, along with other various entertainment clients.

Libertas Institute and the cause of liberty

Friday, May 9, 2014 - 8:00am

Hello Utahns!

By now you're all familiar with Edward Snowden, and more importantly, the information he revealed to the world regarding surveillance activities conducted by the National Surveillance Agency (NSA).

I worked for the NSA for more than 30 years, and retired a few weeks after 9/11 in 2001. I became a whistleblower and an outspoken opponent of the agency's surveillance activities on American citizens. You can learn more about me in an interview I did with Libertas Institute last year.

I'm excited to visit your state on May 9 as part of Libertas Institute's Liberty Forum. I'll be discussing my history with the NSA, my experiences as a whistleblower, my impressions of Edward Snowden, and why Utah should refuse to support the Utah Data Center and the NSA's activities. We live in an Orwellian world—come learn what you can do about it.

I hope you'll join me in Provo on May 9 in support of Libertas Institute and the cause of liberty. Share the event with friends, family, and co-workers—there's only a few tickets left!

Cordially,
Bill Binney
