Media: It’s Like Shooting Fish in a Barrel

We’re the fish, ‘We the People’.  The media is the barrel of information in which we swim, in captivity.  (Who says we’re free?).  This medium in which we live and on which we depend as optimistically pessimistic as our air, water, all our needs and desires -- our information, gossip, news, lies, half truths, suffering truths -- is the bane of our existence.

America has come a long way from July 4, 1776, when it declared its independence from Great Britain, and said in its declaration, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

But it’s doubtful, about growing up.  He is who he is.  A showman, a huckster, a Joker.  An adolescent. Trump’s meeting with Kim Jong-un in Singapore had about as much political meat as Nixon meeting Elvis in the White House.  All that was missing was the cape.  Great photo op, the lights were on, but no one was home.

It’s easy to blame the internet for the decline of the traditional daily newspaper.  It’s a factor, yes, but just because demographics and the social blueprint are changing it doesn’t mean your local newspaper should accept this techno-quick & dirty iPhone phenomenon.  The sad decline in readership, circulation and sales is the result of the newspaper-reading market becoming both stimulated and stupefied by social media.

Beware of Barbecue Bugs

Dear Editor:

What ever happened to the good old days when the worst things we had to fear on Memorial Day were traffic jams and indigestion?

Folks setting to break out their outdoor grill this Memorial Day face a nasty choice. If they undercook their hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken nuggets, their family and friends may face food poisoning by E. coli and Salmonella bacteria. The U.S. Meat and Poultry Hotline advises raising the temperature.

I couldn’t help from thinking, “that’s one up for Trump”, as I watched bulldog media star and Trump advisor, Kellyanne Conway, dismantle CNN’s soft pillow Brian Stelter on his Sunday morning gossip program.  I mean, she really took him apart.
