Weber Pathways Builds Beginner Bike Trail at Oaklawn Park

With the collaboration of many helping hands and a whole lot of dirt, Weber Pathways and the community of North Ogden have come together to create a beginner bike trail at Oaklawn Park.  Located at 1200 E. 2500 N., North Ogden, Oaklawn Park is best known for ballgames and picnic tables nestled in the woods.  Add to that a new mountain biking trail for young riders.

A Reflection on Mothers

“I am sure that if the mothers of various nations could meet, there would be no more wars."-E.M. Forester

Ever since the year 1911, Mother’s Day has been celebrated throughout the United States. In this year it was commemorated as an official holiday in the U.S.A. Thanks, in part, to Anna Marie Jarvis, who was a social activist, and the founder of Mother’s Day (Jarvis lived from May 1st, 1864-November 24th, 1948).

7 tips to make allergy season more bearable

Allergy season has arrived in full force. For those suffering from allergies, it can be an overwhelming feeling of hopeless with no end in sight. When you should be outside celebrating the warm weather and beautiful nature, you are stuck inside trying to avoid anything that blooms or carries pollen.

While allergies and colds have many common symptoms, Dr. Evan Reinhardt, of MountainStar’s Jordan Family Health in West Jordan, explains colds typically include an infection that can cause fever, chills, body aches and a rundown feeling.

Trauma in Childhood Leads to Brains being wired for Fear

Negative childhood experiences can set our brains to constantly feel danger and fear says psychiatrist and traumatic stress expert Bessel van der Kolk. He's the author of the recently published book, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma.

A report by the University Of San Diego School Of Law found that about 686,000 children were victims of abuse and neglect in 2013. Traumatic childhood events can lead to mental health and behavioral problems later in life, explains psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk.

The Benefits of Walking

Walking may be the most underrated form of exercise but science shows that putting one foot in front of the other leads to some super impressive health benefits—both mentally and physically.

When I was younger, I vividly remember going for walks with my Mom all over North Ogden and towards Pleasant View to visit my grandparents.  We talked all about teenagerhood and made up poems together. Memories I’ll always cherish!  And still today, Mom and I go walking on the hills and reminisce of yesterdays or catch up on current events.

Nearly 35 million U.S. children have experienced one or more types of childhood trauma

Almost half the nation’s children have experienced at least one or more types of serious childhood trauma, according to a new survey on adverse childhood experiences by the National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH). This translates into an estimated 34,825,978 children nationwide, say the researchers who analyzed the survey data.

Earth Day!

Former President George W. Bush (1946-2018) once said, “Good stewardship of the environment is not just a personal responsibility, it is a public value…. Our duty is to use the land well, sometimes not to use it at all.  This is our responsibility as citizens, but more than that, it is our calling as stewards of the earth.”

We are exactly that—stewards over the earth.  We are here to enjoy this God-given land but also to take care of it –especially for all those who are living now and those who will supersede us.

Slow The Flow

1 in 29 Utah counties has a need to water. Needs to water may include but not limited to dry soil, higher evapotranspiration (AKA evaporation), warmer temperatures, no rain or snow in the forecast.

If you find that you're unsure, please contact your lawn watering guide (posted here, FYI). Somethings you can do is step lightly on your lawn and if it comes back up easily- no water needed; take a screwdriver and stick it in the lawn if it comes back up clean- (you guessed it!) no water needed.

Book Review: The Orphan Keeper By Cameron Wright

The Orphan Keeper is a book I happened to find on my own, without any recommendation from another person—and, wow--It’s truly an amazing read!  So good that I have been rewarding myself by reading this novel in between my homework assignments!

This book was written by Cameron Wright, who is also the same author who wrote The Rent Collector, which I loved!  So, I knew this was going to be a good book!
